Dad’s Cereal Bowl

Dad’s Cereal Bowl is the ultimate gift for the cereal lover in your life. The perfect surprise for Father’s Day. A nostalgic craft that’s easy to make and super functional. Give him a thoughtful dish loaded with memories.

Update: Our bowl has not withstood the dishwasher, unfortunately, my recommendation is to treat this as a handwash-only dish.

I’m not sure about you guys, but do you have fend-for-yourself nights? Those nights when I haven’t prepared dinner and time’s up, everyone’s hungry. Well, in our house these are fend-for-yourself nights. It basically means we’re eating leftovers, or it’s a peanut butter sandwiches or something else super easy, but I’m not putting in any effort and definitely not cooking. My husband’s go-to meal on the fend-for-yourself night is usually cereal. So with Father’s Day around the corner, I knew getting his own Dad’s Cereal bowl would be a huge hit for him.

Honestly, this cereal bowl is exactly what he needs and with the personalization, he’ll be thrilled with his gift from the boys. He’s always wanted a nice deep bowl for cereal. He uses the large square Rubbermaid plastic container as a makeshift cereal bowl, you know the ones with the red lids, it’s sad. He needs a dedicated cereal bowl. So, when I came across this noodle bowl in Walmart the other day, I was sold.

It’s perfect! On the side, there’s a little cutout, it’s actually designed to hold chopsticks, but my thumb fits in that notch really well, making this dish a very effective one-handed bowl. He’ll be able to carry it around and tip it back to get every last drop of cereal milk. Finding this bowl was a total score. It got my creative mind racing with different ideas and ways we could make this special for him.

I tossed around a couple of different ideas, maybe the boys could add their handprints to it, or maybe they could colour it. I ultimately settled on a message that I could write along the outside of the bowl, making this a super cute keepsake and something that my husband could use regularly for cereal. The message evolved, with the help of rhymezone.com, into the cute poem below.

Dad’s Cereal Bowl Poem

We got you a bowl as big as we could.
Like it? We were pretty sure you would.
A giant bowl big enough for cereal,
Cause we know you like it as a meal.
We each left a mark with our name,
So a keepsake, this will always remain.
Please know, especially today,
That we love you more each day

This cereal bowl turned out better than I imagined. It’s such a cute Father’s Day gift for any cereal lover really, but my husband will be especially thrilled with this thoughtful gift. He gets very nostalgic when it comes to the kid’s crafts, he keeps everything. He’s just that type of guy. Having a cereal bowl that he can use daily, that reminds him how much he means to the boys and I just seemed really fitting.

How to make Dad his own Dad’s Cereal Bowl

If you want to make this for your children to give to their father, it’s pretty simple. Just look for this bowl at Walmart, and use a sharpie marker to write your message along the outside of the bowl. I freehanded a slightly wavy pattern, but feel free to write it on the bowl any way you like. Then finish everything with a couple of coats of Mod Podge (the dishwasher safe version).

SUPPLIES

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. First, clean your noodle bowl really well. I used rubbing alcohol to make sure there were no oils from my hands or dirt on the bowls after I ran it through the dishwasher cycle.
  2. To make things a bit easier for me, I made sure I had a copy of the poem near me so that I didn’t miss a word, etc.
  3. Next, just grab your sharpie and start writing the poem on the outside of the bowl. I freehanded the design, but you could try taping on some paper to give you straight lines, a makeshift ruler if you will.
  4. Once you’re happy with your design, following the directions on the dishwasher safe Mod Podge, lightly paint on a layer and let it dry, before applying a second coat. After 28 days it should be well cured and you’ll be able to put this in the dishwasher.

I can’t wait for Father’s Day to arrive so our boys can give their Dad this super cute craft. I keep offering to give him his gift early, but he hasn’t bitten, yet. When he does open it, I know he’ll be really happy and will get a ton of use out of it. Funny thing is, we’re sitting together on the couch while I’m typing this out and take a wild guess what he’s eating. Ha, I can’t wait!
