Want to know what I love best about apple pie? It’s perfect any time of year. Yes, apples are in season in the fall, but they’re usually available in the grocery stores all year long and this Dutch Apple Pie never disappoints. It’s my favourite. I love the crumble that goes on top, it’s totally craveable! In fact, I may have, on more than one occasion, just made the crumble topping to snack on and I’ve used it in this Dutch Apple Pie Milkshake.
Apple pie is one of the first desserts I really learned how to make. It’s such a classic and I’m sure most folks have had it at some point. I’ve always called this Fran’s apple pie, I didn’t even realize it was a Dutch Apple Pie until recently. The first time I can remember eating this version of the sweet treat was at Fran and Jack’s (friends of my parents). I’m sure we were over visiting and a game of cards ensued, while my brother and I got control of the tv and watched gladiators late into the night, but before all that, Fran treated us to this for dessert.
I was hooked, it became forever known as Fran’s Apple Pie and I still have the recipe written in my original young-me handwriting. I remember calling her and asking for the recipe. It was one of those grown-up moments when your mom says sure we can bake the pie, but you do the leg work. So, I called Fran and she shared the recipe without hesitation. And it’s pretty much the only apple pie I’ve made ever since.
How to make Dutch Apple Pie
This pie is just SO good. Classic apple pie filling gets covered with an irresistible buttery, flavour-packed crumble that’s baked right on top of the apples. Not to mention you can use whatever pie crust is your favourite. I tend to go the easy route and grab a frozen pie shell.
To make this start by coring and peeling all the apples and then slicing them nice and thin. Mix them together with the butter, sugars, flour and cinnamon. Keep stirring until the apple release some of their juices and everything gets coated really well. Spoon these into the crust of your choice.
For the crumble, mix the sugar, flour and cinnamon together and then cut in the butter, mixing until it becomes crumbly, Sprinkle the crumbs on the top of the apples and bake everything for about 45 minutes. Let the pie cool completely so the juices can thicken otherwise, this pie will run.
Not that that’s a problem, it makes a really nice sauce for that extra scoop of ice cream. Or are you an apple pie and cheese person? Cheddar cheese with a slice of apple pie is my mom’s favourite. Whichever you choose, this pie is the perfect dessert to serve any time of the year.
