Can you believe I’ve never made a homemade peanut butter dessert sauce? I haven’t even bought a jar of it from the grocery store. I do, however, love peanut butter. You’ll find it in all my Dairy Queen blizzards, sometimes even in their milkshakes. It makes a perfect snack and I tend to sustain myself most mornings on peanut butter and honey toast. With all that said, it only makes sense that I would add Peanut Butter Dessert Sauce to my repertoire.

This particular dessert sauce is silky and smooth and makes the most irresistible little puddles around the ice cream in a sundae. I’ve also used it as the sauce on a peanut butter poke cake (recipe to follow soon). And I think it would make an amazing dip for apple slices, and even spooned over a perfectly ripe banana. It’s rich and peanut buttery but not so sweet that you’ll tire of it quickly. At least I didn’t!

I also like that it doesn’t harden up, it stays creamy and drizzles like a dream. It’s almost caramel-like, you might even find a few notes of caramel in the flavour. If you like peanut butter, this sauce is definitely for you!

Because this is a quick and easy recipe, you can be enjoying this dessert sauce tonight. Tuck the kids into bed and end your day with a bowl of ice cream covered in this tasty Peanut Butter Dessert Sauce. Sprinkle on some extra peanuts for crunch.

How to make Peanut Butter Dessert Sauce

This is one of the easiest sauces I’ve put together. Basically, it’s a toss and go style recipe, which obviously makes it a favourite. I use a heavy-bottomed sauce pan to melt all the ingredients together over medium heat.

First, melt together the peanut butter and sweetened condensed milk. Use a regular creamy peanut butter for this. An all natural peanut butter won’t work in this sauce. Think regular Jif, Skippy or even your favourite grocery store brand should work.

Stir these two together and then slowly pour in the water to thin out the sauce to a perfect pourable consistency. At the very end, pour in the vanilla and stir until everything is completely combined. I like to serve this warm over ice cream topped with some peanuts or even Reese’s peanut butter cups or pieces. It’s so good!

Don’t stop at ice cream sundaes though. Peanut Butter Dessert Sauce makes a perfect dip for fruit or even stirred into yogurt. Try pouring it over cheesecake, pies such as chocolate chip skillet pies and even over pancakes or waffles. Additionally, I’ve used it as a spread for a peanut butter poke cake and it would be perfect as a filling in a cupcake. I might even be guilty of taking a spoonful or two straight from the jar. Whip up a batch of this for dessert tonight, you won’t be disappointed.
