All you cinnamon apple lovers, have I got a treat for you today! These Dutch Apple Pie Milkshakes are the real deal. Apple Pie filling blended with ice cream and real crumble, topped with whipped cream and salted caramel makes for the ideal fall milkshake, especially this year. Apples are abundant and the weather is unseasonably warm. It’s literally 97 degrees here today. What is that?

I’m ready for fall, seriously, it’s October and it’s hot as blazes! Where are the autumn colours, and the cooler temperatures? I’m in seasonal organization mode, you know, when you pack away the shorts and out come the sweaters. The heavy blanket get pulled from the closets and find a new home on the arm of the couch. Pumpkin, caramel, coffee, and bonfire scented candles all grace fireplace mantels. And of course, the fur-lined slippers start to appear.

This year, however, my boys are still playing in the back yard with the $8 splash pad. Mind you, I don’t think I want to be back in Canada, either, Alberta is covered in multiple feet of snow, or my hometown whose forecast is calling for winter. Is there a happy medium somewhere? Anywhere?

Regardless of weather, I’m a milkshake any-time-of-year, type of girl. This milkshake is sort of perfect for me, because it’s cold and creamy to battle this southern heat, yet packed with apple cinnamon flavours to pacify my cravings for fall weather. Best of both worlds you might say!

How to Make Dutch Apple Pie Milkshakes

Let’s talk about the crumble. Have you ever had a Dutch apple pie? It’s king of apple pies, in my opinion. The usual filling of apples, cinnamon, butter, sugar and a bit of flour grace the crust, but then this pie gets a sugary, crumble sprinkled over the top. As the pie bakes in the oven, the crumble transforms into a warm sweet crust, that’s crunchy on the outside while the inside is still soft and chewy. The crumble is really my favourite part. So, when I started thinking about making an apple pie milkshake, I knew it had to have the same crumble.

To make the crumble, I mix the brown sugar, flour, butter and cinnamon until it’s crumbly. Almost like wet sand. Sprinkle this into a small pan and bake for about 15 minutes. Pull it out of the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Then break apart into little crumbles.

Add the ice cream, milk, apple pie filling and some of the crumbles to a high-speed blender and blend everything until combined. Then, decorate the inside of the glass with salted caramel, pour in the milkshake, top with whipped cream, more salted caramel and crumbles. Serve immediately.

These are perfect for hot fall days. I feel like I need to turn that into a question? Like hot fall days, what the what? Fall is suppose to be cool weather comfort foods. I’m hoping fall will eventually show up, but in the meantime, while our temperatures are still soaring, I’m going to be indulging in apple pie, a fall classic, but in milkshake form. Will you join me?
