This recipe for Easy Two Ingredient Fry Bread, is all because of one of my oldest and best friends, Edith. When Edith, or Ede as I call her, comes across a recipe or comes up with an idea, that’s to die for, she’ll text, and this tasty bread is no exception. I love her texts, especially the ones about food. We’ve been friends since we were three, that’s over three decades of friendship. In those thirty plus years, there have been endless conversations about food.

Our texts usually make their way to food, at some point, even if it’s just a quick question about what each of us is making for dinner. If there’s an event coming up, we often swap menu plans, think major holidays, the Superbowl (of course) and birthday weekends.

This often leads to us reminiscing about this Hot Cheesy Spinach Dip and anything else snack-like. Until one of us finally says, “Ok I’m going to make {insert recipe name here}, I’ll let you know how it goes”. When she texted about this Easy Two Ingredient Fry Bread, it had actually started out as fried mozzarella balls.

This is how the conversation went.

Ede:
OMG
Frying Rhodes Dinner rolls…
Delicious
I made some mozzarella balls
So freaking easy!

Me:
Ok. Details!! Pics???
Did you let them rise first?

Ede:
Yup
I rushed it too, so I put them in the oven, I had set at 200 and then let it cool a bit.
But of course, letting them rise naturally is best.

Me:
Nice!!

Ede:
And then! Lol! I had dough left and no cheese, so I flattened it out and fried it, turned out just like fry bread.

Me:
Get out of here!!
I’ve been wanting to do fry bread avocado toast like that new restaurant. (There’s a new restaurant in my hometown, I tried their avocado fry bread, while I was home. And ever since, I’ve been wanting to give it a go in my own kitchen.)

Ede:
Ohhhhh
Try these rolls!
So freaking easy!
It takes like seconds to fry!

And from that Easy Two Ingredient Fry Bread was born. This recipe is all because of Ede and her kitchen experiments and I could not be more thrilled. We grew up in a small town with lots of Ojibwe culture. These breads are so reminiscent of our grade school days. One bite and it takes you right back to the school gym, sitting cross legged, after watching the pow wow, eating traditional fry bread.

When Ede stumbled upon this recipe, I don’t think she expected it to turn out the way it did. Oh, I know she knew it would be tasty and really how can you go wrong with frying anything. But, I don’t think she thought mashing together those leftover rolls of raw dough would be so similar to traditional fry bread.

What is fry bread, you ask? Well, it’s dough that’s been flattened out and fried. It makes a perfect crunchy bubbled exterior with a soft, chewy interior. What’s the best way to serve them? Try dusting them in icing sugar or spreading on a bit of jam. Of course, this Honey Butter would be amazing on them as would a bit of cinnamon sugar. Or go the savoury route and use them as a base for this Homemade Taco Meat recipe, it would be the perfect accompaniment to these tasty breads.

How to make Easy Two Ingredient Fry Bread

This one is an easy recipe. Using Rhodes dinner rolls, or another frozen dough that you love. Let the dough thaw and rise until it’s doubled in size. Next, take two rolls and meld them together to form on ball. Then, flatten it out to about a quarter inch or less in thickness. You want it nice and thin. The thinner you get it the bigger the air pockets and bubbles. Any shape works, but I tend to go with an oblong or oval shape, as best I can form it.

Heat a pan of shortening on medium heat. Test the shortening by putting the end of a wooden spoon, into the shortening, if little bubbles form around it, you should be good to go. Drop the flattened dough gently into the oil. Keep an eye on this, it doesn’t take long for the dough to cook. About 30 seconds. When the side in the oil starts to turn golden brown, flip it over and fry the other side until golden. When they’re cooked, remove each one from the pan and let it drain on a paper towel. Lightly sprinkle on some salt while these are still hot.

Give these a try the next time you want to make an easy snack. You won’t be disappointed. They’re not exactly a traditional fry bread from scratch, but as a cheater version, you can’t go wrong. Besides, we all need more quick and easy recipes and this one has quickly climbed the weekend menu rotation in our house. They make a great breakfast and I can’t wait to try this with tacos. Or even tear a few pieces to use for dipping in a hot cheesy dip. I think Ede would approve, don’t you?

  • icing sugar, optional
  • jam, optional

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Thaw eight frozen dough rolls, and let rise until doubled in size, about 3 hours.
