Homemade Shamrock Shake

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, whip up a batch of these homemade shamrock shakes. A copycat version of McDonald's signature holidays shake. An easy recipe with ice cream, milk and mint extract.

With St Patrick’s Day right around the corner, I figured, it was the perfect time to share how to make one of my favorite milkshakes, a Homemade Shamrock Shake. McDonald’s signature St. Patty’s Day shake has long been a favourite of mine. Have you tried it? It only comes around for a limited time, right before St. Patrick’s Day, but this year, let’s make it at home. It’s super easy and much cheaper!

Surprise your family with these milkshakes. Whether you’ve got little kids or teenagers, or even grandparents at home, everyone likes a good milkshake. And this milkshake is good! Homemade Shamrock Shake are minty and fresh and with one sip, your whole mouth lights up and your taste buds dance. It’s completely refreshing and I’m about to teach you how to make this super, super easy milkshake.

All it takes is four ingredients, one of which is food coloring. You could skip the food colouring, but the green dye does feel a little more festive, and makes you think mint before it even reaches your mouth. Either way, it’s your preference. All you need is vanilla ice cream, whole milk (substitute with whichever milk you have on hand), mint extract and green food colouring. Make sure and stick with mint extract, do not substitute with peppermint, it’s too strong for this. The mint is exactly what you want here and tastes just like McDonald’s version.

This milkshake is perfect for St. Patrick’s Day, but wouldn’t you make it all year long, if you could? I would. Think nice cold refreshing milkshakes on a hot summer day. For me, mint milkshakes remind me of Christmas.

Christmas Eve to be exact. When we were kids, my family would always visit friends (Ron and Rose) on Christmas Eve, and they would serve grasshoppers, it was tradition. Rose would make a huge holiday spread, I still dream about her homemade blueberry perogies. Yes! Blueberry perogies and they’re so good. At the end of the evening, Rose would make a batch of grasshoppers. I waited all year long for these. Now, if you have never had a grasshopper, it’s basically the alcoholic version of a shamrock shake. Think shamrock shake, but add vanilla vodka and creme de menthe. We’ll tackle that version soon!
