Hot Dog Chili Sauce
Can I dedicate this one to my husband? Is that weird for a food blogger to dedicate a recipe to someone? Either way, my husband loves chili dogs. If we’re looking for a quick meal and neither of us wants to cook. It’s fast food for this family and his regular order is chili dogs! So, I made it my mission to find a Hot Dog Chili Sauce that he loves and guys, this is the one!
There’s something so comforting about a chili dog. I think it sends me right back to childhood, or maybe it’s early adulthood. I’m talking about the time when you’re old enough to venture out and try new dishes, things your parents didn’t necessarily make, but you’re still young enough not to care about calories and your diet. I think chili dogs found a sweet spot right there in the middle for me. Not that I care so much about calories, but I do know about better food choices that I could and should be making.
I figure, since I’m making it at home, it’s already better for me. And this version of Hot Dog Chili Sauce is so much tastier than the versions you’ll find at the fast-food joints. Not only does it taste better, but how you use this sauce is no longer limited to hot dogs. It’s yours to use however you like! I love a good chili dog but even more than that I like to use this as a sauce to dip french fries into. It’s also great on a baked potato, on nachos and especially in this Cheesy Chili Dog Dip. The list is endless, so let’s dive in!
How to make Hot Dog Chili Sauce
I love making chili in my dutch oven, it’s actually the only dish I use to make chili. I’m sure you have a pan or pot that only certain things are used for, amiright? There’s really no reason behind it, but I’ve started associating most of my sauces with this beloved dish. If you don’t have one they’re a great investment and really do cook foods nice and even.
So, in a dutch oven or your own favourite saucepan brown the ground beef. I like using the Pampered Chef Mix and Chop (aff. link) whenever I cook any ground meat. It’s seriously one of the smartest kitchen inventions and helps make sure your beef is all chopped up nice and fine, a must for hot dog chili! Once the beef is cooked almost through, toss in the onions and let those cook down until soft.
Then stir in the spices and let these cook for a couple of minutes before adding the tomato sauce. Once you’ve poured in the tomato sauce, mix it all together. Then reduce the heat, cover the pan and let this sauce simmer for an hour, stirring it occasionally. When it’s ready, spoon over hot dogs and top with whatever condiments are your favourite. I suggest mustard, pickles and shredded cheese! Don’t forget a little bowlful to dip those french fries into, as well.
So, now you’re armed with my favourite version of Hot Dog Chili Sauce and a few of my most-loved ways to use it. I’m curious, what will you put it on after trying it with hot dogs, or will you go for something else altogether the first time you make it?

Tanya
Hi Wanda. Thanks for the question. I’ve never made it in the crock pot but I can’t see why it wouldn’t work. Please let us know if you try it!
