If you’ve been following along, you already know that my husband and I have two little boys, and might be wondering why I’m about to show you How to Make a Mermaid Crown. Well, this year, I got to pitch in for my niece’s birthday and help make it extra special. You see, her and her brother’s birthdays fall just over a week apart, so they’ve always shared a party. This year they each got their own. Theirs to choose the theme and help decide all the details. My niece chose a mermaid party.

I love my boys more than anything, but somedays I feel like I miss out on the mother-daughter relationship. I don’t get to do girly things with a little version of myself. Not that I’m the girliest of girls, but I wish I had little toes to paint now and then, and a little girl who would walk beside me so cool and calm in the grocery store. Ben hops along like he’s the Easter bunny in training, the energy is never ending.

When my niece called me up to ask if I would make her an invitation, I’m pretty sure I was as excited as she was if not more. She wanted a mermaid theme, which I already knew. You see, we had spent an afternoon talking about Elan’s birthday party and ideas she also had for her own party. She scooped the homemade jellyfish decorations we made for Elan, to use at her own party and a couple of the other fun ideas we used for Elan. You can read about his first birthday party here.

She also had a list of fun names for her birthday meal. I made her some tags to put around the buffet table, so the girls could identify the different foods. A veggie and fruit tray, she called “coral reef”, gumballs she named sea pearls and the ham sandwiches on croissants were crabs. I also made her a thank you tag to attach to each loot bag for her guests and then a couple banners to hang around the house. She was thrilled.

And then, I was out shopping one Saturday morning and came across the cutest mermaid tails at the Dollar Tree. They had just started putting out their Halloween stuff and I knew they’d be a hit. I cleared it with my sister-in-law, who gave me the quantity she would need. And then of course, I found some tattoos, so we grabbed a couple of those for the party, too.

I was having so much fun shopping for my niece’s party, I didn’t want to stop. Pretty sure, I was living vicariously through the party, getting my fill of girly things. So, the boys and I ventured over to Michaels and I grabbed a couple things to make her a mermaid crown. It turned out so well. I was so excited for her to see it. Even Ben talked about it daily, until we finally put it and the other stuff in the mail and sent everything off to her, so she’d get it in time to celebrate her eighth birthday!

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Firstly, you’ll want to pull off any coloured gems, because you’ll cover them with seashells, and a flat surface is easier to work with.
  2. Then, start laying out the main shells you want to use, I built from the centre out. This will give you a rough idea of what you have in terms of shells and how to fit them together.
  3. Once, you’re happy with your centre layout. Start building this out. It’s a lot of trial and error. You’ll eventually find a shell that you can use to continue building this larger. Keeping in mind that you don’t want to get too far if you’re using tall skinny shells as sort of the main focal point.
  4. As you’re happy with the layout, start hot gluing the seashells in place. I filled in any gaps with small fake pearls. And that was it. It was a fairly easy set up. The only struggle I had was just finding the right shells, but a few turns usually got something to fit, and I could always fall back on the pearls to fill in any extra spaces.

This was such a fun party accessory for my niece. She even let her little friends take turns trying it on. How cute is that! She was so excited for this crown and the other items, I got a photo of her sporting her new headpiece the night the parcel arrived. Better yet, I got to help out with a girl’s party, and fill that small void. I’m pretty sure, it’s the last girly thing I’ll be doing in the foreseeable future. We’re all toy cars and super heroes at the moment, in this house.
