French Onion Rice
I can honestly say, I’ve never truly been a fan of rice. It’s just never been my thing. I truly believe it’s from overuse, you see, my mom loved rice, or maybe it was my Dad and she was cooking it for him. But, after years of rice at least once a week, I’m over it. That was until I added a package of onion soup mix to my rice. And like that French Onion Rice was born and I’m a huge fan.
You would be surprised to learn this, but there are a couple of things out there, that I loathe, ok loathe is strong. Besides, I’m not opposed to eating them, they’re just not my go-to. I’m like this with store-bought cookies and chips. I will pass them up without ever flinching, but if you put down a batch of fresh-baked cookies, I will devour them all, without remorse.
Is it because these are things we always had in our house growing up? That’s my theory. My detest for the fluffy white grain has to be because of that, right? Do you have something you grew up eating that you can’t stand, now that you’re a grown-up?
Ok, back to the rice. It is a winner. It has the perfect onion-y flavour. Is that a word? It is now! The rice is the perfect accompaniment to any meat and between you and me, It’s fine as a meal all on its own. I should know. I’ve made it twice in the last week, and I’ve eaten it as a full meal, all on its own. In fact, I loaded everyone else’s plates with the other sides, so I could save extra rice just for me. Such a departure from my norm, when it comes to rice.
I’m surprised, I didn’t think to add onion soup mix before now. It seems like such a natural thing to do, now that I’ve done it. We add soup mixes to all kinds of things, why not rice? Think of the possibilities. For the first time in years, I’m actually excited about rice. Can you believe that? It surprises me too, but French Onion Rice has totally converted me! Ok, let’s talk instructions so you can make this tonight.
How to Make French Onion Rice
It’s really quite simple. You prepare the French Onion Rice pretty much the same way you would regular basmati rice. You’ll need a bit more water and of course, the beef bouillon and onion soup mix.
In a medium pot, stir together the water, rice, soup mix, bouillon and a bit of butter, bring it all to a boil and then cover the pot and reduce the heat to low. Let this mixture simmer for about 20 minutes or more. When it’s ready, give it a quick fluff with a fork and mix in a couple of tablespoons of butter and then serve it nice and hot.
The addition of bouillon and onion soup mix will make this side dish the star of your next meal. Serve it with roasted chicken, steak or even a roast. This dish will be a tasty companion to whatever you decide to serve it with. It’s a real winner in my books!

Can you sub something else for the beef bouillon? Maybe beef consommé. I don’t have any beef bouillon on hand.

Could I use regular brown rice or jasmine brown?
Tanya
Hi Caprice!
Thanks for reaching out. I’ve never tried it, but I’m sure you could just be sure to cook the rice accordingly. Let us know how it turns out! Tanya

I love rice. I eat it several times a week as a side dish or even a bowl for lunch. My hubsnd is more of a noodles or potatoes guy but he’ll eat rice on occasion. THIS recipe for French Onion Rice was a winner! I’ve made it twice in 3 days and we both devoured it. I’ve made tons of rice recipes and this one is the best and easiest by far. Tons of flavor and the butter adds that extr richness at the end. I may make it again tonight!

Yay!! I’m so glad you enjoy this!

I have really been enjoying your recipes Tanya. With this rice recipe I am wondering if I could make it in my rice cooker. Would I have to change any measurements?
Tanya
Thanks so much for the comment, Kathie! I really appreciate it! My gut feeling is you’d be fine as is. Maybe reduce the water to 2.5 cups, but I’ll be honest here, I’ve never tried this in a rice cooker, so I’m not entirely sure. If you do try it this way, please let me know how it turns out!

Hi, I just love this idea but was wondering if the ratio of rice and water is off. Usually its 2 cups of water for 1 cup of rice. Does the rice turn out too mushy?
Tanya
Thanks for your interest Eva! I have never found it mushy, but I do tend to like my rice a little overcooked. If you’re concerned about the extra water, try reducing it to two and a half cups that might be a bit more to your liking. I hope you love it!
