So, you’re all aware that my love of terra cotta planters is a real thing, but do you know how deep it goes? I want a pallet of planters to paint! Say that three times fast! Seriously though, just park a pallet right outside my back door, so when the urge strikes, I can just open my door and grab another pot. They’re so easy to paint and decorate in multiple ways. This Pizza Painted Planter for Basil, for example, is such a cute addition to my window sill and all it took was a little bit of paint and a marker.

Right now, my newest thing is coordinating herbs with their planters, such as adding a packet of cilantro seeds to this Taco Planter and of course a basil plant for this pizza painted clay pot. Seriously, they’re so playful. Such a fun way to display your herbs.

This Taco Planter Housewarming Gift was my first in this, let’s call it, series. There’s a couple more to come, but I’ve been brainstorming and you really could make all kinds of these amusing terra cotta pots. I think dill with pickles and oregano with little eggplants would be adorable. Or even just paint what’s in the planter on the outside. Strawberry plants with sweet strawberries painted on clay pots, I totally doing this now! See, I really do need that pallet!

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Firstly, you’ll want to peel off any stickers and get rid of any glue if there is any.
  2. Next, paint the planter except for the top lip with the white paint. Let this dry between coats. I used three coats to get the coverage I wanted.
  3. Now, you’ll need to lighten the yellow and the brown using a bit of white paint. You’ll want a fairly light brown for the crust and a lighter yellow, just so it’s not so harsh.
  4. With a small straight edge paintbrush (or whatever you’re comfortable with), and using the yellow paint, paint on the triangles to represent the pizza. I wasn’t careful here. I like the idea of a messy look, and besides the black marker will tidy things up, in the end.
  5. Let that dry. Then using the finer brush paint on a thin line of the brown paint at the wide end of the triangle. Let that dry and then add another thin line right below the brown line with the red paint, to represent a bit of the pizza sauce and if you want add a few circles to represent pepperoni.
  6. Finish by using the fine tip marker to outline the pizza and the crust. Add a scalloped edge all along the wider part of the yellow, in between the cheese and the sauce. Then draw circles around the pepperoni and add dots to them.
  7. Lastly, fill the planter with potting soil and a basil plant or basil seeds, whichever you choose.
