Taco Planter Gift Idea
So, I have a new obsession and it’s terra cotta planters. They’re right up there with joggers (as in the pants, I don’t run and don’t plan on it anytime soon) and this Hot Cheesy Spinach Dip. First of all, they’re super inexpensive and can be decorated in every way imaginable. When I’m brainstorming craft ideas, I talk aloud to my husband. Ha! I say to him and not with him because he’s usually only halfway listening, however, when I suggested this Taco Planter Gift Idea his ears perked right up. I don’t know if he was feeding off my energy or if he was truly as excited as I was. Either way, we both agreed this needed to be added to the roster, immediately!
A few weeks back, my husband, our two boys and I flew to Winnipeg, Manitoba to meet my parents and together, the six of us drove another six hours to Regina to surprise my aunt who was packing up her home and moving to Saskatoon. Everyone in the family, that was able to, drove into Saskatoon to help her out with the big move.
Let me back up a bit, we were actually there for her surprise 70th birthday party, under the guise of helping her with moving, unpacking and getting her new home set up, as best we could in such a short time frame. We weren’t much help, it was more or less wrangling kids so they weren’t in the way, unfortunately, she was still left with a lot to do on her own.
It was a wonderful weekend full of family and fun. My cousins and I along with our spouses took advantage of the extra aunts, uncles and grandparents, and enjoyed a dinner out. Afterwards, we even did an escape room and managed to figure it out with time to spare. It was so much fun! Saturday night, we ended the day with a wild game of Family Feud, girls vs. guys edition, and there are answers I still cannot stop laughing over.
When the weekend came to an end, I was all tears, but this is nothing new after a visit with family. I just can’t help it, I’m one of those people whose emotions are right at the surface, but at least with that, you always know where I stand. I’m a pretty open book. On the way home, as I was trying to compose myself, I got thinking about housewarming gifts. We bought my aunt a sweet little vegetable garden from a local nursery in Clavet, just outside of Saskatoon. If I could’ve safely packed this taco planter, for my aunt, then this definitely would have been her gift. She would love it!
Like I said earlier, I have been obsessed with terra cotta pots, they’re a dream and so easy to turn into super fun gifts. For this latest project, I wanted to combine the two somehow, super cute design with the twist of using it as a fun gift. Giving someone a plant is always a hit, but let’s expand on that and use the pot as a catchall for everything you could need for a Mexican meal, and then cover the pot in coordinating tacos. Lastly, add a packet of cilantro seeds and you’ve got a gift that keeps on giving and will be the cutest addition to any patio.
What to put in your Taco Planter Gift
- cilantro seed packet
- taco shells or a taco kit
- taco seasoning or a homemade version
- a jar of salsa or salsa verde
- bottle of hot sauce
- can of green chillies or chipotle peppers
- black olives
- tea towels, I used one that was covered in limes
- Mexican themed paper napkins
- taco holders
I can’t wait to gift this to someone. I’m in love with it. Seriously, this might be a new love language for me. Obviously, I have three other terra cotta planters on the go, all along the same line, ’cause I just can’t stop! I’m literally chomping at the bit, I can’t wait to share these. They will be on the blog soon, but in the meantime, here’s how you can make your own.
How to make your own Taco Planter Gift
SUPPLIES
- terra cotta planter with matching saucer (my pot was roughly 7.5″ in diameter)
- acrylic paints (white, dark yellow)
- foam sponge paintbrush (affiliate link)
- straight edge paintbrush
- black fine-tip marker
- items to fill the pot (taco shells, cilantro seeds, seasoning, etc.)
- masking tape, if needed
INSTRUCTIONS
- Firstly, you’ll want to peel off any stickers and get rid of any glue if there is any.
- Next, paint the planter except for the top lip with the white paint. If your planter doesn’t have a top lip, tape off the top one inch or so using masking tape, just to give it the illusion of a lip. Let this dry between coats. I used three coats to get the coverage I wanted.
- With a small straight edge paintbrush (or whatever you’re comfortable with), and using the dark yellow paint, paint on very rough half circles to represent the taco shells. I wasn’t meticulous here, at all. I like the idea of a messy look, and besides the black marker will tidy things up, in the end.
- Let that dry. Finish by using the fine tip marker to draw shell shapes over each of the yellow paint marks. Next, draw a scalloped edge all along the top part of the shell, to make it look like lettuce. Then add dots to the shell.
- Now, fill the planter with taco related items and of course a packet of cilantro seeds!
I’m giddy over this planter, for real! I can’t wait to celebrate a friend’s new home, father’s day, mother’s day, birthdays, whatever the occasion happens to be! In the meantime, and you can do this too, I’m going to plant the seeds and enjoy it for myself. This taco planter needs to live in the sunlight. It is way too fun to be stashed away, waiting for the right occasion !
