Homemade Texas Toast Croutons
There are a few things, in my mind, that truly make a salad. One is the dressing, I think this is a given. It’s what pulls all the ingredients together. Then there’s the cheese, I can’t think of the last salad (coleslaw doesn’t count) I ate that didn’t have cheese in it. And then you’ll need to top it with a crispy crunchy crouton, just like these Homemade Texas Toast Croutons.
I bet, if I ask you to name a restaurant that has the best croutons, you’ll be able to quickly ramble off your favourite. I’ll give you a minute. Got it? For me, it’s the Texas Roadhouse. Hands down the perfect croutons. They’re crispy but not hard. They’re light and crunchy with the perfect amount of seasoning. Seriously, plan your next dinner out to this lively steakhouse and order a house salad. SO good!
With that said, how are we going to enjoy restaurant-style croutons when we don’t live inside a restaurant? Well, I have a solution. I’m about to teach you how you can make your own homemade version that is light, crispy and perfectly seasoned. Let’s go!
How to make Homemade Texas Toast Croutons
So, first things first, a lot of recipes call for french bread or some sort of baguette, but thick-cut Texas Toast bread is where it’s at. This keeps these croutons extra crisp but still really light. There’s nothing worse than biting into a crouton and almost losing a tooth because it’s just too hard. It’s the worst! Now, just to clarify, this isn’t the frozen garlic toast in the freezer section, you’ll find texas toast bread with the other fresh loaves of bread near the bakery.
To make these croutons, start by gently slicing your bread using a bread knife into bite-size pieces. You want your bread to keep its shape, so be extra gentle while you’re cutting it. Place the cut bread into a large bowl. In another bowl melt the butter and mix in the oil and spices. Pour a little bit of the butter mixture over the bread cubes and toss to combine, continue doing this until the cubes are coated and you’ve used up all of the butter mixture.
Spread the coated bread cubes onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Push them around into a single layer and then bake for roughly 15 minutes at 400 degrees F. Pull the pan from the oven and let cool slightly. Use them right away or store in an airtight container for a few days.
Seriously, if I wasn’t trying to make better choices, I’d probably just snack on these instead of eating the salad. Every bite is so so good! I totally would eat these all by themselves, and I may have snacked on a few while I took pictures. But they’re actually really good in a salad as well. So, maybe give both a try, start with the snack and end with the salad!
