The weather the past few weeks has been hot, blistering hot, in fact. The weather reporter keeps calling it oppressively hot. It sounds like we live in a dusty town, that hasn’t seen water in years. We don’t, I assure you, but when they say hot, down here in the South, it’s not just hot, it’s humid and gross. But, that means it’s the perfect time to make popsicles. My Kid’s Favourite Shirley Temple Popsicles are just what this weather calls for. A cold sweet treat to counter all this heat.

A couple weeks ago I came across this post on Salt & Baker. She packed her popsicle molds full of fruit and then filled them up with 7-Up. Three ingredients so simple and they look delicious. I had never thought about adding pop to a popsicle. Ok, after just typing that, it seems totally obvious, the word “pop” is right there at the beginning of popsicle {face palm}. It must be destiny.

This opened all kinds of doors for me. What drinks could be turned into popsicles? Which drinks would my kids love, what did my younger self love. What did I order when my family would go out for dinner? As I combed my memory, the prettiest sunset coloured drink popped up. Shirley Temples or kiddie cocktails, however, you call them, are such a beloved treat for the young ones. And like that I knew the next recipe I wanted to put together.

If you haven’t had a Shirley Temple, it’s equal parts orange juice and 7-Up or Sprite and then a tablespoon or two of grenadine syrup. and it’s always topped with a maraschino cherry.

How to make Kid’s Favourite Shirley Temple Popsicles

Naturally, I had to get every aspect into these popsicles, especially the maraschino cherry. In fact, let’s add extras, because what kid doesn’t love these cherries. I started by gently mixing the orange juice and 7-Up (or Sprite). I fill each popsicle mold about three quarters full. You want to leave enough space for these to expand, because, well, they will.

Then I add a teaspoon of grenadine syrup to each mold. I don’t bother mixing, I love the sunset colours in this drink, when you first pour in the grenadine. They’re such a pretty summer colour. I like to add extra cherries to my popsicles. I drain a 10 ounce jar of maraschino cherries, cut each in half and then split them amongst the molds. Then freeze overnight.

I was trying to get the pictures for this post taken, early one morning, but of course my toddler woke up earlier than I anticipated. It worked out great, though, he became my little hand model for this photoshoot. And then of course we had popsicles for breakfast, because what else do you do when your son walks in and you taking pictures of the prettiest popsicles.
