Speckled Easter Egg Vase

I’m totally on a speckle everything kick. As soon as I finished these Speckled Easter Eggs, I wanted to tackle something else. I started thinking about Easter, and then that turned into Easter dinner, and then that turned into ham and scalloped potatoes and then, well, I made lunch. But with all my thoughts gathered around the table, it was obvious what needed speckling next, a centerpiece, of course. A gorgeous robin’s egg blue Speckled Easter Egg Vase full of bright flowers, to be exact.

I love walking into any grocery store at the moment, specifically after months of winter, and seeing the flowers. Doesn’t it feel like they’ve all been muted for the last few months and now they’re vibrant and calling to you. I immediately spot them when I walk through the doors. It really does feel like spring is in the air. Tulips, lilies and daisies just scream spring for me. What’s your favourite Spring flower?

So really, it’s the perfect time to kick our crafting skills into high gear and celebrate spring. And since Easter is right around the corner, let’s tackle this super easy, super cute and totally spot on for the holiday Speckled Easter Egg Vase. I think back and I’m not sure if we ever had an Easter centerpiece when I was little, but with this cheap and cute egg-like vase, who wouldn’t want to decorate the table for dinner?

How to make your own Speckled Easter Egg Vase

Supplies

glass bowl vase or bubble vase (whichever you call it)
primer spray paint (I used this one)
robin egg blue acrylic paint
a foam sponge paint brush (like this)
plaster of Paris
stencil brush
small container to mix paint or plastic cup
newspaper (to keep your table, relatively paint-free)
paper towels for clean up
wet foam brick, cut to size (NOT dry foam)
bouquet of flowers
scissors

Instructions

Start by washing your vase in hot soapy water and let it dry really well.
Once this is dry, spray with the primer and let this dry. I left mine to dry overnight.
After you have your globe vase prepped, mix up your chalk paint. The basic ratio for chalk paint is 3 parts paint to one part plaster of Paris. I just eyeballed this. Make sure, however, after you add the plaster of Paris, that you mix it together really well. I used a small container for this. You only need to make chalk paint for the main paint colour of the actual vase.
Now, Just start painting the vase. I used a foam sponge brush for this part. The first coat is going to look a little sparse, but that’s ok, with a few more coats, it’ll be perfect. Once it dries, apply a second coat. I added a heavier coat the second time and pressed the foam sponge paint brush against the vase, rather than dragging it from the top down. Doing it this way produces a more egg-like textured look. I had to apply a third coat to touch up a few areas after the second coat dried.
Ok! Once the last coat of paint is on, it’s time to speckle. I used white and brown paint for this. Pour a bit of paint into separate containers and water both down a little bit. I used a small spray bottle, which I already had on hand, and did about 4 sprays. This next step is messy, really messy, be prepared. Dip your stencil brush into the white paint and dab some of it off on the newspaper. Now lightly hit the brush against the palm of your opposite hand, you should start to see little flecks appear on the eggs. Practice this over the newspaper, until you get the hang of it. Speckle the vase with the white and then repeat with the brown paint.
I waited overnight before I started to arrange flowers inside the vase.
Cut the wet foam down so that it’ll fit into the vase. The instructions said to soak the foam first, but I ignored that. I poured about a cup of water into the vase, enough so that the foam floated on top of the water. The foam will suck up what it needs and settle at the bottom. It only takes a minute or two. Now use your scissors to trim the flowers of excess leaves. I start filling the vase from the top and then add some flowers to the sides and then just start filling it all in. I try to decide how tall I want my arrangement and make that my centre flower and then work in shorter flowers all around. The wet foam made this part super easy, it’s a definite must!
