Easy Barbecue Sauce
I may miss my hometown like crazy somedays, but I think it’s safe to say the barbecue down here is a fantastic consolation prize! I’m a huge fan! The smoked meat itself is so good, but adding a tasty sauce takes it over the top. When I came across this recipe for Easy Barbecue Sauce in our family cookbook, I was excited to give it a try. I’ve never made barbecue sauce from scratch before, but as it turns out, it’s way easier than I thought. And I already had all the ingredients, score! And you know what else, it was delicious!
Since moving to the South, I’ve been indulging in as much smoked meat as I can get my hands on, if you ask my waistline, maybe a little too much! What I think is so incredible is how different each bbq joint’s sauce can vary so much. There’s sweet, spicy, tangy, and savoury. There are regional sauces and battles to see whose is the best. Most barbecue sauces are based in either vinegar, tomato, mustard or mayonnaise. That last one scares me a little, but mayo can surprise you! Have you tried a grilled cheese with mayo instead of butter? Surprisingly delish!
I’d consider this barbecue sauce more of a beginner’s version. Simple ingredients, a perfect base to start experimenting. I know that’s my plan, but it is tasty just as it is, so if you’re new to the barbecue scene, like me, give this one a go. A recipe from my grandpa’s sister-in-law, so you know it’s stood the test of time!
How to make Easy Barbecue Sauce
Ready for an easy recipe? In a small pot saute the onions, stirring constantly until they’re soft. Stir in the rest of the ingredients and let this simmer for 15 minutes. Cool it down and then store it in an airtight container.
We used this barbecue sauce on grilled chicken and it was so good! Aunt Minnie (my grandfather’s sister-in-law) also suggests using it on burgers, meatballs and ribs. I can’t wait to use this on everything! We have even used it as a dipping sauce for french fries and it was equally good. Whatever you use it on, I hope this barbecue sauce inspires great grilled and barbecued meals!
