This super cute Mint Sundae Hostess Gift is the sweetest little gift you can bring along to a barbecue or summer get together. Basically, pack a little crate full of fun ice cream toppings and your potted mint plant and you’ll be assured the MVP of any gathering. Do you normally bring along a dish or dessert when you’re invited for a meal? Next time, offer to bring dessert but don’t worry, because I’ve got you covered. This fun dessert idea will please old and young alike and best of all, you’ll be leaving a cute little planter behind, as a thank you.

A few weeks ago, I posted my Taco Planter Housewarming Gift, which I’m completely in love with. This, got me thinking about other times you may need a quick gift. With summer in full swing, it seems like everyone is out and about. Having a fun, summer-inspired hostess gift is essential. And being that painting planters is totally my go-to craft lately. Why wouldn’t I combine the two with an ice cream cone painted terra cotta pot with a fragrant mint plant for a fun hostess gift, that can also double as a dessert too.

It’s always such a nice gesture to bring an appetizer or dessert, whenever you’ve been invited to a get-together. Hot Cheesy Spinach Dip and the Best Chunky Guacamole are a couple of our favourite starters, to share with a crowd. Now, if you’re in charge of dessert, lucky you! You’ll impress your host with this fun, thoughtful gift which you can deck out with all kinds of fun extras to create one unforgettable DIY sundae bar.

ice cream cone painted terra cotta plant with a mint plant
ice cream cones
chocolate syrup
Andes chocolate mints
mint Oreos
mint chocolate chips
chocolate sprinkles
vanilla ice cream
an ice cream scoop
a little tag that read “sundaes for your enjoy ‘mint'”

Of course, you don’t have to limit yourself to mint flavours. Besides, there are no rules. Any sundae toppings you love, go ahead and include them. If there’s a plant that you think would make a great combination with your ice cream choice, then go for it. I love the idea of strawberry ice cream with basil, or orange sorbet with rosemary. Like I said, no rules!

HOW TO MAKE a mint sundae hostess GIFT

SUPPLIES

terra cotta planter with matching saucer (my pot was roughly 5.5″ in diameter)
acrylic paints (white, brown, mint green)
foam sponge paintbrush (affiliate link)
straight edge paintbrush
black fine-tip marker
mint plant
potting soil
items to include (ice cream, cones, toppings, etc.)
crate, decorative box or something similar to put everything in
paper tag (optional)
string to attach a paper tag (optional)

INSTRUCTIONS

Firstly, you’ll want to peel off any stickers and get rid of any glue, if there is any.
Then, paint the planter except for the top lip with the white paint. If your planter doesn’t have a top lip, tape off the top one inch or so using masking tape, just to give it the illusion of a lip. Let this dry between coats. I used three coats to get the coverage I wanted.
Before you start painting the ice cream cones, you’ll want to lighten the brown using a bit of white paint. You’ll want a fairly light brown for the cones.
To paint the ice cream cones use a small straight edge paintbrush (or whatever you’re comfortable with). Start first by painting the cone shape, an upside-down triangle, so to speak, with the light brown paint. Then, using the mint green paint, paint on a rough ice cream scoop shape and overlap the top of the cone. Don’t worry if it isn’t perfect, you can tidy things up when you trace the shape with the black marker.
Then, finish the planter by using the fine tip marker to outline the ice cream cones and add little squares to represent the “chip” in mint chip ice cream.
Lastly, fill the planter with potting soil and a mint plant.
If you want, you can include a paper tag written with a cute message, such as “sundaes for your enjoy ‘mint'”. Attach the paper tag with ribbon or string.
Finally, fill the crate or decorative box with the ice cream cone painted planter and the other sundae toppings.

I’d love it if someone showed up on my doorstep with this cute gift, not to mention cover dessert at the same time. When I was growing up every New year’s Day, we’d go to my Aunt and Uncles and we’d finish out a fun day of sliding with a sundae bar. As an adult, they still make me happy!
